What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files generated on the user's device that store information generated by their activity on the Internet. Some cookies are strictly necessary for a website to function properly (technical cookies), while others serve to improve performance and the user experience. Cookies can be of different types and serve various functions. Among other things, cookies allow remembering language preferences or other configuration options so that it is not necessary to change them manually every time the website is visited; facilitate navigation and thus optimize and personalize the display of the website and offer, for example, content more adapted to the user's interests and browsing habits; access restricted areas, services or functionalities without having to register at each visit; or measure website traffic and carry out aggregated usage and navigation statistics.
What types of cookies exist and what are they for?
According to the purpose they serve, the following types of cookies can be distinguished: - Technical cookies: These allow the user to navigate through a web page, platform or application and use the different options or services available, such as controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the user session, accessing restricted sections, remembering elements from the last visit, using security elements during navigation, storing content for video broadcasting or sharing content through social networks. - Personalization cookies: These allow the user to access the service with some general predefined characteristics based on criteria on the user's device such as language, type of browser used to access the service, regional settings, etc. - Analytics cookies: These, whether handled by the website owner or third parties, allow quantifying the number of visits to the website and thus perform measurement and statistical analysis of how users use the website's services, with the purpose of introducing improvements based on the analysis of usage data. - Advertising cookies: These, whether handled by the website owner or third parties, allow managing the advertising spaces on a website as efficiently as possible, based on criteria such as the content edited or the frequency with which ads are shown. - Behavioral advertising cookies: These allow managing the advertising spaces, as efficiently as possible, included by the publisher on a website, application or platform from which the requested service is provided. These cookies store information about user behavior obtained through continuous observation of browsing habits, allowing the development of a specific profile to show advertising based on it. According to the duration of their activation, two types of cookies can be distinguished: - Session cookies: These are temporary cookies downloaded while the user accesses and uses a website, allowing them to navigate from one page to another more efficiently or remember configuration preferences selected (e.g., remembering a list of products in the shopping cart). Generally, these cookies are deleted when the browser is closed. - Persistent cookies: These remain stored on the device after browsing the website for a period defined by the cookie owner, ranging from minutes to several years. Generally, these cookies remain until the user or browser deletes them and can help websites remember that you have visited before or ensure that ads shown are oriented to your browsing habits.
